Everyone told me that once the baby leaves your body all that swelling will go away immediately. Ummmm….not so much. For the first week after Abel was born, my feet were so swollen you would have thought I was 400lbs if you just looked at my feet. My hands and feet have been swollen since I was 7 months pregnant. My feet went back to normal a week after labor…although I think they are a good 1/2 size bigger now. Now my hands…that is a whole different story. Who knows when I will ever get that precious diamond stone back on my chubby ring finger. The day after Abel was born, I felt weird numbness and tingling in my left hand. I thought, no big deal it will go away. Right? WRONG!!! It is still lingering and at night when I get up to feed Abel it throbs. My OB was a little confused and told me I should go to the doctors. So off I went. The result…still waiting. He was a bit confused himself. He ruled out carpal tunnel, which I assume is good news. They drew my blood and took ex-rays of my hands and are sending me to see a Rheumatologist. Stay posted for the results….
Before I left for my appointment, I was at my mom house where my nephew, Josh happen to be. He always shows concern if someone is hurting or in pain. He knew I had a dr. appointment for my hand, so he ask to look at my hand. I held my hand up and he carefully inspected it, gently touching each finger and pondering what could be wrong. He says, “Well, it looks swollen.” I said, “yes, it is”. Then he paused and very seriously says, “Auntie, have you been doing one handed push-ups…this could be the problem.” I told him I wish I could do one handed push-ups. How adorable are kids! They say the cutest things. I wish that was the problem with my hand, but I can barely do push-ups using both hands.

I hope everything checks out ok. I had tons of swelling in my hands too and it took 4 months for me to finally squeeze my rings back on. That’s when I dropped a ton weight too. When I was 8 months pregnant a guy asked me how I was pregnant and not married. Ridiculous, I know! I ended up buying some fake bling until I could wear my real stuff.

We’ll be praying for the results. It took me a long time to be able to wear my rings again. I too bought extra rings just to have something on. My feet also went up a 1/2 size after Sammie. I hear that’s common too. Thanks for walking yesterday! It was great talking with you!

OMG…he asked if you had done one-handed push ups!! I love how serious he is about medicine. perhaps that’s his calling. he already has a better bed-side manner than most doctors.

Jule, so sorry you are having so many problems with your hand. What a random side affect. Pregnancy is a serious crap shoot of the body! There is just no way to know how or what your body is going to do. Just keep looking at Abel and remind yourself that it was all worth it, funky hand and all!
